Have you ever watched an episode of Lassie and wished that your dog could be famous? This article takes a look at how to introduce your pet into the world of show business

If you are reluctant to take the stage yourself but would like your dog to appear on the big screen, this article takes a look at some ways you can try to launch your pet into stardom. This is far trickier in the UK than if you were in the US but it can still be done. You should not have high expectations of the money you will earn from your dog as unless your dog is extremely successful you are unlikely to make much.

The first step is to ensure that your pet is VERY well trained. It does not matter how gorgeous or cute you think they are if they won’t sit still or run off at the first site of anything interesting. It is important that you practise a lot before you approach any agencies and that your dog can stay when you are a fair distance away from you. Clicker training often works well, you can generally buy these from any good pet supplies store.

Depending on the type of work you want for your pet you should also train them to look directly at you so that modelling work can picture the dog looking right into camera (which you will be standing behind). The dog should also be able to act naturally around strangers as they will often be required to do this. The more ‘behaviours’ your dog is trained to do, the more likely you are to get work. Sit, stay, beg, paw got to your dog bed, play dead plus any unusual tricks you can think of are ideal. It is also important that you train your dog in as many different situations as possible. Film sets can be busy places so your dog should be calm and composed in these locations.

Your dog should also have been well groomed before you approach anyone but don’t be disappointed if your dog doesn’t get picked for a while. Clients looking for dogs for their photos, adverts, TV or films usually have a fixed picture in their head of the breed and colour they are after- yours probably just doesn’t fit the bill just yet.

Generally speaking it is far easier to find work for your dog if you have an agent. There are a few animal specific agents or some general model agencies also have a pet division. Some agencies also train dogs specifically to appear on film or TV. Approach a few agents first to see which you feel most comfortable. It is a good idea to put a little package of photos and video of your dog doing some commands and a little bio about yourself and your dog that you can hand or send to any potential agents. Do not part with any money- genuine modelling agents take commission when they get you work and will not expect any money up front.

Finally if your dog is lucky enough to get an audition make sure you are prepared. Ensure you practise with your pet before the audition; make sure they are well exercised on the morning of the interview, and if they eat in the morning that you give them their dog food . It may sound obvious but make sure that they have been to the toilet before you go into the studio. Take everything you need for the day such as grooming kit, clicker, treats and towels in case that it is wet. Above all make sure that you on time as they are unlikely to wait for you to turn up if you are late. Good luck!
